About Molten Wedding Rings

The "Molten Wedding Ring Company" was born from a desire to make unique wedding rings that are ethical, luxurious and timeless with a modern twist…rings that have a raw elegance, beautiful when worn alone, yet sit well alongside modern and traditional engagement rings. Rings that have a heart, a story and are crafted with care and attention by artisans with high quality materials.

The molten style of our rings began in 2005 with a collection aptly named serendipity by Devon based jeweller Erin Cox. This signature collection, that came about through playing with metal and pushing it to its limits while in its molten state, has developed over years of perfecting. The refined, fluid, molten texture featured in all of Erin's jewellery collections in silver, gold and platinum reflects the Devon landscape in which she lives and takes inspiration for her work.

Erin still creates stunning fine jewellery in her workshop in Topsham, Devon. You can visit her website or boutique shop where you will find cabinets filled with timeless pieces of beautiful jewellery that are made to Erin's exacting high standards.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING OUR RINGS …

Erin developed the range suitable for men and women by creating 8 different rings. Moulds (a bit like a jelly mould!) were made from these in order to have multiples made in a range of metals. When you order your ring, your chosen metal is cast (heated to a liquid and poured) into Erin’s original mould, it is then ‘cleaned up’ in our Topsham based studio by skilled jewellers. This involved removing excess metal from the casting, filing, smoothing, sizing and polishing before being carefully checked and sent on to its new owner. See the process below.

1) Erin created the first Molten Rings in this way - hand melting the metal, shaping and filing to create the master rings which moulds have been taken from.

2) When you place your order we cast your chosen metal in Erin’s original moulds. Our rings are cast here in the UK and then returned to us here in Topsham ready to be cleaned up.

3) We cut away excess metal with a saw and then file the remaining ‘stump’ where the metal was poured. This creates a smooth face and inside of the ring.

4) Sand paper is then used to file the ring to a smooth finish. The ring is checked for size and any adjustments are made if needed.

5) We then use an abrasive polishing wheel to smooth the ring further and to start polishing the ring.

The ring is then finished with a final fine polish and buff with a big fluffy polishing wheel. If you want a matte finish this is applied in the same way but with a rough handheld polishing wheel.

All rings will then be sent to be hallmarked - this is where a stamp is applied to the inside of the ring to show the metal quality (9ct, 18ct or platinum), the date, the assay office mark and the makers mark. (The assay office is where the metal is tested and stamped.)

The Team

Erin Cox - designer

Erin is Mum to lovely and equally curly haired Matilda and Willow.

Designer and Maker, Erin is 20 years into her personal love affair with making, quoting Erin her self, " when you hobby is your job, you have to find other hobbies!" Erin's unique style and approach to jewellery making is the core to our business, and without her genuine joy in making and strong sense of aesthetic we would be nothing.

When not going hammer and tongs at the bench, Erin is a keen forager, and sources all sorts of deliciousness from the Devon hedgerows and fields. And when a bit of peace is needed, spinning and knitting is always appealing.

Janie Wolverson - Merchandising and Sales

Janie is a self confessed ‘wedding geek’ and loves to chat all things wedding. She got married in 2010 and is a mum to a little girl and ‘fur baby’.

Janie can be found working predominantly on social media, advertising and web design for Molten from our flagship store Erin Cox Jewellery.

She runs her own wedding based business - The Lucky Sixpence, where she crafts hair accessories and jewellery for brides and their bridal party. Through this she has made connections across the country, in the US and across Europe and so she is a great one to chat to about your wedding day needs!

When she isn’t making she loves to walk, sew and do yoga.

Joanna Kendall - workshop assistant and sales

Joanna joined the team in January 2019 after returning from living in Jakarta, Indonesia for a few years. Joanna spends most of her time in the workshop assisting Erin or finishing off the rings and is usually covered in polish!

Joanna lives in Shaldon, opposite her home town of Teignmouth. When she’s not at the shop she loves gardening, baking and is mad on rabbits! Joanna also makes her own jewellery and has a collaborative jewellery collection with artist and illustrator Laura Wall.

Jasmine - Sales, Admin & Social Media

After completing a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Crafts at Falmouth University, Jasmine worked for Erin from 2012-2015. After a few years gallivanting, chalet hosting and developing her own small handmade jewellery business, she has happily returned to the nest. This time, with a new addition, rescue dog ‘Motley’ (often found snoring in the corner of the shop). Jasmine is passionate about the world of contemporary handmade jewellery. She loves the creativity & variation that comes with working for a craft business and the inspiration that comes with working alongside like-minded women.
